sport and recreation

The Sports and Recreation Program is designed to offer students, parents, and teachers and opportunity to participate in and or organize a wide range of sports and activities. In order for this program to be successful, SSIS needs not only student participation but also parent and teacher volunteers to organize and supervise programs. Volunteers do not need to be experts in a given area; they only need to be willing to provide students and opportunity to participate in a safe environment.

The Sports and Recreation Program runs for three 10 week sessions with the majority of classes being held on Saturday’s from 9:00-12:00, however classes are also available during the weekdays. It is necessary to sign up for each session; each session has its own brochure which is available at least two weeks prior to the start of the next session. In this way students, parents and teachers will know what activities are continuing, which are ending, and what new programs are being added. Students can move from one activity to another throughout the course of the year. Programs that were held or are currently being held are; floor hockey, basketball, Tae Kwon Do, gymnastics, indoor sports, soccer, swimming for fun, swim instruction (additional fee), baseball, ballet, dance and hip-hop, and step aerobics (adults only).

The Sports and Recreation Sessions for the 2008-2009 school year are as follows;
Session 1 September 6th –November 22nd
Session 2 November 29th –March 14th
Session 3 March 28th – June 20th.

To participate in the Sports and Recreation weekday programs students need to pay a membership fee. The membership fee covers the cost of having safety personal at the school on Saturday’s, the cost of the Sports and Recreation t-shirts and transportation to and from SSIS from Singa Plaza. For the 2008-2009 school year the membership fee has a three tired system;

Tier 1
Full year membership 400RMB. This allows a student access to activities offered in all three sessions of the Sports and Recreation Program (excluding activities that require an additional lesson fee) and one Sports and Recreation t-shirt for each session.

Tier 2
Two Session membership 300RMB. This allows a student access to activities offered during two Sports and Recreation sessions (excluding activities that require an additional lesson fee) and one Sports and Recreation t-shirt for each session. It is not a requirement that the two sessions be consecutive.
Tier 3
One Session membership 200RMB. This allows a student access to activities offered during one Sports and Recreation session (excluding activities that require an additional lesson fee) and one Sports and Recreation t-shirt.

Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities
In addition to the wide variety of sports SSIS students can participate in, there are a number of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities where students can explore their interests. Currently, SSIS students can further develop their skills and interests in Japanese, art, writing, and maths as part of an academic extension club.
Additionally, students can begin to develop there skills as debaters and future diplomats with their involvement in the Model United Nations (MUN). The MUN program at SSIS is available to Middle School and High School students. Delegates have the opportunity to participate in MUN conferences in Singapore and throughout China.

Students can also develop and explore their skills in agriculture by becoming a member of the Gardening Club, which tends a garden located at SSIS and produces various herbs throughout the school year.
