In grades 1-5 students participate in two lessons of Physical Education (PE) per week. Throughout the year students will take part in a wide variety of physical activities to help them develop their movement skills. These include: swimming, gymnastics, creative dance, athletics, adventure challenge activities which are designed to promote team work, problem solving and co-operation and various sports such as: football, basketball, badminton and floor hockey.
Lessons follow the IBO PYP philosophy of providing students with inquiry based learning opportunities designed to develop students’ understanding of the role of physical activity in a healthy lifestyle.
Other opportunities provided for Primary students include: lunchtime sport, SSIS Sport and Recreation club activities, grade 3/4/5 soccer gala days in Shanghai, interschool sport, swimming carnival and sports day.
Primary House Competitions
The aim of Primary House competitions at SSIS is to promote friendly competition, teamwork, fun and sportsmanship with our students. Students are divided into 4 Houses: Dragons (red), Phoenix (yellow), Monkeys (blue) and Tigers (green).
House competitions consist of 3 main events:
- Swimming carnival
- Sports Day
- Ongoing Lunchtime competitions

Swimming Carnival
The Primary swimming carnival will be held during five 1.5 – 2 hour sessions over 2 days (November 1st/2nd) with each grade level participating for one session. Students will compete in a number of races and novelty events throughout the session such as: 50m freestyle, 25m backstroke, noodle races and across the pool events.
Sports Day
This is an activity day where students participate in a number of athletic events and novelty races. Activities include individual events such as 100m, high jump, 400m and also novelty team events such as skipping, bocce and egg and spoon.
Ongoing Lunchtime competitions; (Competitions are for grade 3/4/5 only).
This involves teachers taking initiative to organize and host lunchtime competitions and recording results. Activities may be sporting or academic. Some examples include:
- Grade 4 basketball
- Grade 3 dodgeball
- Grade 5 singing etc.

Points system
The winner of each of the 3 major events will receive 100pts, 2nd = 80pts, 3rd = 60pts and 4th = 40pts. The highest points total will be declared the winner for the 2007/2008 school year.
Note: As Lunchtime competitions may be numerous, each individual competition winner will receive 3 points or in the case of a tie; each time will get 1 point. These points will be tallied throughout the year with the team who has the highest tally being declared the Lunchtime competition winner. |
