This programme leads on from the Primary Years Programme, and may lead students into the IB Diploma Programme. In this way the school provides coherence, continuity and a progressive build up of good learning habits, self-confidence and thorough understanding of the academic subject areas.
The IB MYP provides a framework of academic challenge and skills for students aged 11- 16 years. Early puberty and mid-adolescence are critical phases of personal and intellectual development and the programme aims to provide students with skills, creativity, discipline and flexibility. Intercultural awareness is central to the programme as is the importance of giving students a personal value system that will enable them to live as thoughtful members of their local community and the larger world.
The student-centered educational programme acknowledges the importance of the individual academic learning areas but it also transcends the traditional school subjects by accentuating their interrelatedness. The threads that link the subject areas are at the core of the MYP and are known as the Areas of Interaction. These are
- The Approaches to Learning
- Community and Service
- Environment
- Health and Social Education
- Homo Faber
Each student also completes a Personal Project in 10th grade. This is an independent piece of work that may take the form of an essay, an artistic production or other form of expression and is intended to show the students understanding of the five Areas of Interaction. |
