We at SSIS are very aware that students learn in a variety of environments – in their homes, schools and communities. The Middle School program at SSIS begins in Grade 6 and allows for the unique learning styles and needs of the adolescent. Working closely with the Elementary Division to ensure continuity in approaches and content, the Middle School provides the internationally accredited programme of the International Baccalaureate that is specifically designed for the middle years student. This programme, entitled MYP, provides a broad, balanced and rigourous academic curriculum that challenges and inspires students to work hard and become life long learners. Students and teachers use the core beliefs of the IB learner profile as a guide to excellence and international mindedness and infuse these traits into all areas of the school community.
Adolescence can be a very challenging time for students and to provide as much support as possible during this stage, we have implemented a student centred pastoral program. The homeroom teacher, or teacher advisor, is integral in this model and is the very first contact point for parents. The homeroom is also the focal point of personal and social education. Grade Level Coordinators, members of the Student Services department and the administration team all work together to ensure that students are provided with the support that they may need.
