Grade 6 is an important year for students at SSIS. The move from primary to secondary can be exciting for some, daunting for others. This is why we have a dedicated team of teachers to help them transition happily and safely. Students in G6 – G10 study the MYP program and part of this is an active involvement in Community and Service. Grade 6 students are all involved in helping their immediate community - the current Grade 5 - in their transition to secondary.
They have worked hard with their teachers to come up with a list of activities including a social activity an academic activity and a mentoring activity. The most recent event was when G6 invited G5 to lunch. This proved to be a relaxing, social time when questions were asked and answered. Next is a quiz and some grade 6 students are also working on providing “Idiot Guides” to Secondary in many different languages.
Another important and hugely successful part of Grade 6 is going on a 3 day Camp to Hangzhou. For many it is the first time away from home comforts. All students challenge themselves to complete activities that they would not normally do. All participate fully and come away with a heightened sense of personal satisfaction having succeeded physically, mentally and emotionally in the various team building activities undertaken. This helps prepare them for the academic challenges that lie ahead of them in Grade 6 and beyond.
