How is it programmed?
At SSIS, we use the INternational Baccalaureate Organisation's Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) as the framework for our planning, teaching, learning and assessing. Our program is concept-based and focuses on inquiry and play-based teaching and learning strategies to educate global citizens for the future they willinherit. Curriculum is designed to buildkn owledge, skills, concepts, attitudes and the ability and desire to act independently. Learning experiences are integrated and balanced to develop the whole child: socially, emotionally, physically and academically. Teachers will be collaboratively planning to ensure coherence of the Pre-K programme, that everyone meets the school's learning outcomes as well as focus on the needs of individual classes and individual learners.
Each class in Pre-Kindergarten is conducted in large double classrooms. Each class has one expatriate (English speaking) teacher, one Chinese teacher and an Ayi (or classroom assistant). English is the language of instruction and is used in the classroom for all children. Chinese and German language are used during Chinese/German lessons for those children studying these languages.
Teaching and learning happens in a range of different student groupings (whole class, small groups and individually) depending on the learning goal. The programme is driven by exploration, or inquiries, into the written curriculum. Pre-Kindergarten teachers are committed to providing teaching/learning experiences that support learners in construction of their own knowledge and understandings. We are building from what the children know to establish new conceptual understanding, harness new skills and develop productive, pro-social attitudes.

The Written Curriculum encompasses 6 key learning areas: language, mathematics, arts, science, social studies, personal social and emotional development. Core learning outcomes, or learning expectations for all Pre-Kindergarten students, for these learning areas are embedded within an integrated curriculum that weaves understanding from all the disciplines in an holistic way.
Learning experiences are focussed on concrete, active learning, developmentally appropriate practice and a committment to play-based strategies for learning that make learning engaging for everyone.
The Programme of Inquiry is organised in 6 Transdisciplinary Themes. Each theme is explored to some degree during a Unit of Inquiry, or focussed exploration, during the year.Pre-Kindergarten students undertake 6 Units of Inquiry throughout the year.Curriculum letters are part of our home/schoolcommunication. These willcome home as each unit starts to let you know what our next exploration will be and offer some ideas/suggestions on how to be part of that, both in school, and at home.
