Chinese Program Introduction
We believe that children acquire Chinese language in an environment rich in integrated and meaningful learning experiences. We nurture an appreciation of the richness of language, including a love of literature, utilizing the experiences that allow children to participate actively in Chinese activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing. We want children to share and enjoy a wide range of simple Chinese rhymes, songs, poetry and literature and encourage them to improve their spoken language and alternative communication systems.
Chinese Lesson Time
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes receive 5 forty minute Chinese lessons a week. Nursery classes receive 4 forty minute lessons a week.
How we group students
Students are separated into two groups. All children who speak Chinese or have basic Chinese will be taken by their classroom Chinese teacher. Children who have no Chinese language will learn Chinese with the Chinese as a Second Language teacher (CSL Teacher).

What will students learn?
CSL children learn basic Chinese - greetings, simple sentences, simple Chinese songs, and recognition of some simple Chinese words. They will begin conversations with friends and learn Chinese characters. Children in the advanced group will follow the Chinese Program. In this program, they will have stories, rhymes, songs and lots of topics to talk about. Pre-Kindergarten children will start reading simple Chinese books. For Kindergarten, children will start to write some simple Chinese characters. In the second semester, Kindergarten children will learn Pinyin. We also connect the Chinese lessons to our PYP units. Children’s depth of understanding is supported by our dedicated teachers in every unit.

How we learn
During Chinese lesson time, we have large group time, small group time, as well as individual work time with the teacher to make sure every child has the opportunity to speak, practice and converse with the teacher and their friends. We will use stories, rhymes and songs to help the children learn Chinese words and sentence patterns. We also have the children practice Chinese during listening and speaking games. There will also be lots of chances for the children to learn Chinese through real life experiences and lots of fun activities.
