Elementary School

The Elementary School activities programme offers a range of after school (extra-curricular), class-time (co-curricular) and lunchtime activities.

After-School (Extra-curricular)

After school activities are offered to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 and are held over two seasons during the year.

Through the After-School Activities programme the Elementary School offers a vibrant range of arts activities including visual arts, drama, music ensembles and choirs to cater for students of varying abilities. Many different types of sports are also available and SSIS participates in the Junior International Schools Sports Association (JISSA) which offers opportunities to play competitive sports with schools within and around Suzhou. Students also have the opportunity to explore and learn about different cultures as they develop a sense of global awareness and internationalism.

We generally offer a range of arts activities on a Tuesday and sporting activities on a Wednesday to allow students to participate in different types of activities.

The Elementary after school programme is complemented by outside groups who also offer after school classes such as private music lessons, swimming, and self defence. For more information go to the SSIS Community Learning Hub.

There is a reduced 5:00 pm bus service available for students in Grades 2 - 5. This service does not take students to all compounds. Kindergarten – Grade 1 students are required to be picked up by a parent or caregiver at 4:45 pm if they are participating in after-school activities.

Parents use the Power School Public Portal to sign up for the Elementary activities.

Class-time (Co-curricular)

All Elementary students participate in the co-curricular activity programme. This runs once a week for one period on Thursday for the Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten students and from 2:30 - 3:30 on Friday for the Kindergarten to Grade 5 students within the school day.

All Elementary students rotate through a range of activities over an eight week period with a culminating inter-house challenge event for Kindergarten to Grade 5 students in the ninth and final week of the season.

The four mediums though which all co-curricular activities are taught are organised Sport, the Arts, Design and Science. These mediums have been purposely chosen to enhance the breadth and depth of our Primary Years Programme and ensure that all students experience a variety of activities.

Lunchtime Action Groups

The SSIS Action Groups programme supports the PYP curriculum in encouraging students to explore and participate in service learning. The Action Groups include our Kids4Kids charity focused organisation (Learn more), as well as a student-centred student council.

The Action Groups run for 30 minutes during the lunch break and use a range of facilities at SSIS. These clubs are voluntary and children can choose the club they are interested in.
