IB Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading to examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19 years. Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows its graduates to fulfil requirements of various national education systems, the diploma model is based on the pattern of no single country but incorporates the best elements of several. The IBMYP programme which precedes the Diploma Programme prepares students with the study skills and approaches to learning which they will need as they enter the Diploma Programme.

Students entering the diploma programme will take course in Theory of Knowledge (TOK), will take part in Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) and prepare an personal research paper (extended essay) of around 4000 words. They also choose ones subject from each of the six groups below. Some variation in subjects taken in group 6 are possible in discussion with the SSIS IB Diploma Coordinator.

Subject Groupings in SSIS

Group 1: Language A1

Taught: English (HL/SL), Chinese (HL/SL), Korean (HL/SL), Japanese (HL/SL)

Self-Taught: There are further self taught language options such as Italian that could be taken in consultation with the IB Diploma Coordinator.

Group 2: Secondary Language (A2, B)

English (HL/SL), Chinese (HL/SL), Spanish (SL) Chinese Ab Initio (HL/SL) and other school supported languages in consultation with the IB Diploma Coordinator.

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

Economics (HL, SL), History (HL, SL), Geography (HL, SL), ITGS (HL, SL), Business and Management (HL, SL)

Group 4: Natural Sciences

Biology (HL, SL), Chemistry (HL, SL), Physics (HL, SL).

Group 5: Mathematics

Mathematics (HL, SL), Maths Standard (HL, SL), Maths Studies (SL), Computer Science (HL, SL).

Group 6: Performing and Visual Arts

Visual Arts (HL, SL), Music (HL, SL)


The Core Requirements

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

A course which explores the relationship among various disciplines and ensures that students engage in critical reflection and analysis of the knowledge acquired within and beyond the classroom.

Extended Essay (EE)

A piece of research work of some 4000 words which provides an experience in producing an independent research paper. This should be written in one of the subjects selected for the IB and completed under supervision.

Creation, Action, Service (CAS)

This component of the IB Diploma program ensures students partake is core activities that are run by the school. Schools need to complete the prescribed hours for as part of the IB Diploma course.
