Grade 9-12 Course Descriptors


Asian Studies (HS)
Asian Studies is a High School Diploma course that focuses on the history and social development of selected Asian countries. The course will allow students to understand the different levels of development in selected Asian countries and how this development influences Asia and the world. The course will look at Asian history but will focus on events and developments in the 20th and 21st centuries. Students will be assessed through group presentations, unit tests and exams and written assignments.

Asian - American Studies (HS)
The G12 HSD Asian-American Studies course looks at the relationship between the USA and the Asia-Pacific region during the 20th and 21st century.

The USA emerged as a global superpower in the 20th century and it has had a signigicant geopolitcal influence on the Asia-Pacific region. This course will focus mainly on the Spanish-American War, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and American - Chinese relations.

Assessment will be taken through two essay assignments, unit tests, presentations, a mid-term exam and a final exam.

American History (HS)
The American History Course will allow students to have an in-depth look at the United States and its people. The United States is a world leader in innovation, medicine, scientific research, industry, and manufacturing. The world's largest economy for the last 50 years, the United States makes up 25% of the world's production. Any student would benefit from having an understanding of the United States and its people. Regardless of their career choice, they are certain to cross paths with some aspect of American influence. The students will have considerable input and choices as to the exact content to be studied, within the aforementioned framework. It is a student-driven course designed to be flexible to the students' needs as they arise. The outline of the course can and will be changed throughout the course based on student learning needs.
